BET Surface Area Analysis
Sample Analysis
BET Surface Area Analysis
Principle of Measurement
Gas adsorption
1. Nitrogen gas is introduced into the sample, and the volume of gas adsorbed on the surface (= adsorption amount) is measured.
ㅤ - Unit of adsorption amount: cm³/g (volume of nitrogen adsorbed per gram of sample).
2. The adsorption amount is converted into specific surface area using the BET equation.
ㅤ - Adsorption amount is proportional to the specific surface area.
ㅤ - The greater the adsorption amount, the higher the specific surface area.
ㅤ - The lower the adsorption amount, the smaller the specific surface area.
3. From the adsorption amount, information about pore volume and pore size, in addition to specific surface area, can also be obtained.
* Analysis Conditions
- Analysis Gas: Nitrogen (Purity: 99.999%)
- Pressure: 0-1 bar
- Temperature: 77 K (using liquid nitrogen)
- Analysis Equipment: BELSORP MINI X / BELSORP MAX (Manufacturer: MicrotracBEL)
Measurement Items
adsorption / desorption isotherm
- Represents the volume of nitrogen adsorbed by the sample under varying pressures.
- Adsorption isotherm: 0~0.99
- Desorption isotherm: 0.99~0.1 (If analysis down to 0.01 is required, please specify when applying.)
BET specific surface area
- Unit: m²/g (surface area per gram of sample)
- When analyzing only the specific surface area (excluding pore size distribution): Only the adsorption isotherm is analyzed for P/P₀ up to 0.3.
*If analysis across the full range of 0~0.99 is required, please specify when applying.
total pore volume
- Unit: cm³/g (pore volume per gram of sample)
pore size distribution
- Enables verification of the pore sizes present in the sample.
- Classification by pore size :
* Micropore: ≤2 nm (e.g., activated carbon, zeolites)
* Mesopore: 2-50 nm (e.g., TiO₂, Al₂O₃)
* Macropore: ≥50 nm (e.g., porous carbon structures, silica)
- Pore size distribution types vary by analysis range
* BJH plot: 2-180 nm (meso/macropore analysis)
* MP plot: 0.4-2 nm (micro)
* HK plot: 0.4-4 nm (micro)
* NLDFT plot: 0.4-460 nm (micro/meso/macro)
- Please check the type of plot required on the application form.
- If uncertain or if there are no specific requests, the BJH plot will be provided by default.

Sample Preparation
1. Materials with high specific surface area (≥100 m²/g):
ㅤ- Required amount: 0.1 g (powder form).
ㅤ- Materials with pores: Activated carbon, zeolites, TiO₂, Al₂O₃, and other substances with micro or mesopores.
ㅤ- To ensure accuracy and reproducibility, the sample quantity should be at least 0.05 g.
2. Materials with low specific surface area (≤100 m²/g) or unknown properties :
ㅤ - Required amount: ≥0.3 g (powder form).
ㅤ - Non-porous materials: Substances without surface pores (non-porous).
ㅤ - Materials with pores in the micrometer (μm) or millimeter (mm) range, such as sponges or urethane foam.
ㅤ - Non-porous substrates, wires, or film-like materials.
ㅤ - For consultations, please contact the person in charge.
Precautions
- The required sample quantity may vary depending on the sample.
- Providing a sufficient amount is crucial for smooth analysis, especially if there is no preliminary information on the sample's specific surface area or pore size.
- Please pack the samples in glass or plastic bottles whenever possible.
- Avoid using zipper bags, as contents may spill during transit.
- The sample cell's inlet width is approximately 5 mm. Samples larger than this must be cut into smaller pieces before sending.
